Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are set to build a new border checkpoint, Kazinform reports quotes Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan Marat Karabayev as saying after the meeting of the Kazakh, Kyrgyz prime ministers in Astana on Monday, February 24.
According to him, in 2024, the volume of automobile transportations between the two countries reached 2.4 million tons of cargo, surging by 19% since 2023.
He also spoke on modernization and expansion of the existing border checkpoints.
“This year, we plan to fully modernize the Besagash border checkpoint. Construction and assembly works will start in April. The Sortobe checkpoint does not accept heavy trucks now. We plan to repair this checkpoint and launch transit of heavy trucks through it in May,” Marat Karabayev said.
The sides also discussed the possibility of building the ninth checkpoint on the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border.
“The point at issue is Aksu-Kamyshanovka checkpoint. The Kazakh side has already begun developing the relevant documents. The construction of the new border checkpoint will start next year,” the minister said.
