On the 16th of December the people of Kazakhstan celebrate the Independence Day, Kazinform News Agency reports.
The Independence Day is celebrated today in line with the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On State Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan”. On December 16, 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the Law “On the Independence and Sovereignty of the State”.
The preamble of the Law says: “The Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan, expressing the will of the people of Kazakhstan, recognizing the priority of individual rights and freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other universally recognized norms of international law, confirming the right of the Kazakh nation to self-determination, based on the determination to create a civil society and a rule-of-law state, pursuing a peaceful foreign policy, declaring its commitment to the principle of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and the process of disarmament, solemnly proclaims the state independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.'
The proclamation of independence ushered the beginning of modern history for Kazakhstan, which gained the opportunity to independently build a sovereign state, develop the national economy and culture, and conduct an independent foreign policy.
President Kassym-Jomart TOKAYEV has repeatedly emphasized that it is the sacred duty of all Kazakhstani people to preserve Independence for future generations, who will surpass our achievements.
The day of the proclamation of Independence, December 16, is also a day of remembrance for the tragic events that occurred in December 1986 in Almaty, when Kazakh youth protested against the policies of the USSR leadership, which infringed on the rights and interests of national peripheries.
In honor of the Independence Day, cultural, educational, and sports institutions across the country's regions organize dozens of events aimed at enhancing the political culture and civic solidarity of Kazakhstani people.
Earlier, the akimat of Astana announced the events that will take place citywide on the occasion of the Independence Day.
